Russia's decision to suspend nuclear arms deal unfortunate: US

From dreamsforce.com

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called Russia's decision to withdraw from the New START treaty on nuclear arms control "unfortunate and irresponsible". He said Washington was ready to negotiate with Moscow on the deal.

"We are still open to negotiations with Russia at any time to limit the number of strategic weapons, regardless of the level of relations between our two countries," Anthony Blinken told reporters at the US Embassy in Athens, Greece, on Tuesday.

Earlier today, in his annual 'State of the Nation address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his withdrawal from the 'New Start agreement. It was the only treaty between the United States and Russia on nuclear arms control. Former US President Barack Obama and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the agreement in 2010.

NATO chief Yanes Stoltenberg said Russia has withdrawn from or violated key arms control agreements over the past several years. And with their decision on the New Start Treaty, the entire structure of arms control fell apart.
The US Secretary of State said, 'Russia's announcement to withdraw from the New Start Agreement is unfortunate and irresponsible. We are watching closely to see what Russia does. We will reaffirm our commitment to the security of the United States and its allies under any circumstances.

Russia's announcement also drew reactions from Western military alliances NATO and the European Union (EU). NATO chief Yanes Stoltenberg said Russia has withdrawn from or violated key arms control agreements over the past several years. And with their decision on the New Start Treaty, the entire structure of arms control fell apart.

The head of NATO said these things at a press conference in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. He was accompanied there by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. At the time Josep Borrell said, 'Russia is destroying the security system built after the war of nerves. The announcement of the country's withdrawal from the New Start Agreement is proof of its actions.

Meanwhile, after Putin's speech, the chief of staff of Ukraine's presidential office said in a Telegram message today, "Our goal is to get Russian forces out of Ukraine and punish them for all their actions."
