A significant time-out storm that has swept across North America is making the New York municipality of Buffalo look like a war zone, the state government said.

The municipality recorded 25 fall-related deaths on Monday, up from 13 since Sunday.

"It's a battle with Mother Nature, and she's bringing everything she's got to us," said New York State Governor Cathy Hochul.

At least 50 people failed across the country as the blizzard stretched from Canada to the Mexican border.

The area around upstate Buffalo, New York, was hardest hit.

"It's (like) going into a war zone and the businesses down the street take a hit," said Hochul, a Buffalo resident.

He said residents were facing a "life-changing situation" as multiple emergency vehicles were ill-equipped to reach the worst-hit areas or got stuck in the snow themselves.

They flee south to avoid time out. The storm is still looking for them

How to stay safe in a time-out storm

A family with young children from 2 to 6 has progressed to 11 hours before Christmas Day has been reserved.

"I was just hopeless," father Zila Santiago told CBS News. He said he was fit to keep warm by keeping the machine on and playing games with the kids in a harmless way.

More victims are expected to be located after the ice melt releases trapped vehicles and allows access to remote homes.

Winter storms such as "bomb cyclones," which produce heavy snow and winds when atmospheric pressure drops, disrupt travel across the United States.

Forecasters say it will ease in the coming days, but the advice remains to avoid travel unless necessary.

An estimated,000 homes and businesses endured power outages over the weekend—though power is slowly being restored.

Deaths from the storm were also reported in Vermont, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Colorado. Temperatures have dropped so low in South Florida that iguanas have become concrete and fallen out of trees.

The western US state of Montana was worst affected by the winter outbreak, with temperatures dropping to 45 degrees Celsius.

In Canada, businesses in Ontario and Quebec bore the brunt of the storm.

Four people were killed when a machine overturned on an icy road near the megacity of Merritt in western British Columbia.
